Seton Hall University is a private Roman Catholic university in South Orange, which is a suburban municipality in the New York Metropolitan Area located in Essex County, New Jersey, with a population estimated at a number of nearly 17 000 inhabitants, during the 2000 census.
The university was founded by Archbishop James Roosevelt Bayley, in 1856, and it is the oldest diocesan university in USA, as well as the oldest and largest Catholic university in the US State of New Jersey. Seton Hall University first started as Seton Hall College, being organized into a university in 1950, following an unprecedented growth in enrollment.
Seton Hall is known for its educational programs in law, business, nursing, education and diplomacy, and according to US News & World Report, it has one of the top 100 law schools in the nation. In 2009, Business Week placed the university among the top 50 universities in the nation that open doors to the highest salaries, Seton Hall’s Stillman School of Business being ranked 56th among the top 100 undergraduate business schools and number one in the state of New Jersey, by BusinessWeek.
The institution offers its students graduate, undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in more than 70 academic fields of study, through 9 academic units which include: the College of Arts & Sciences, School of Health and Medical Sciences, Whitehead School of Diplomacy, Seton Hall University College of Nursing and Stillman School of Business.
The athletic teams, from Seton Hall, are known as the Seton Hall Pirates, who participate in the NCAA’s Division I and in the Big East Conference, in various sports, including in baseball, golf, soccer, softball, tennis and volleyball, being best known for their achievements in men’s basketball, in which they won the National Invitation Tournament (NIT) in 1953, and lost in the finals of the 1989 NCAA Tournament to Michigan, 80–79 in overtime.
